The Lord Will Provide

In late September of 2024, Pastor Jason sent me a YouTube video of a song I’d never heard: The Lord Will Provide. At first listen, I thought to myself, “This song is okay. I guess.” However, the more I listened and really thought about the lyrics, the more I began to absolutely love it.

Look at the flowers in all of their beauty
I don’t have to wonder, You know what You’re doing
So why would I worry at all, You’re faithful to supply

Everything I need, everything I need
My Father has it, my Father has it
Every single time the Lord will provide
My Father has it, my Father has it

Verse one immediately draws the listener’s mind to the most famous sermon ever preached: The Sermon on the Mount. Surprisingly, the chorus then connects Matthew 6:26-30 with one of the earliest examples of worship in the Bible. In Genesis 22:1-14, we see God test Abraham by calling him to offer his son of the promise, Isaac, as a sacrifice to the Lord on Mount Moriah (believed by many to be the place where Solomon’s Temple would be built)

Early the next morning, when Abraham and Isaac approached the mountain of the Lord he said to the servants who accompanied them, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” As they began the climb to the place of sacrifice, Isaac asked his father, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Believing that God could raise the dead, Abraham replied, God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.”

Of course, God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, saying to the patriarch, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Abraham then looked and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. The Lord had provided, just as Abraham believed He would. Abraham then named that place The Lord Will Provide, and roughly 2,000 years later the only begotten Son of God was crucified there as a sacrifice for our sins, providing a way for us to become part of the Lord’s forever family.

If the Lord has already provided the grace to meet our greatest need, will He not provide the grace necessary to help us love where we live? Will He not provide the grace to help us forgive? Will He not provide the grace to help us proclaim the good news to those who need to hear it? Why should I worry at all? You’re faithful to supply. Every single time the Lord will provide. My Father has it.

Grace and peace,
Phil
